Monday at the funeral home. Mayor The Front In Race Against Councilwoman DALLAS (AP) Laura Miller, a former muckraking journalist turned politician, appears to be on her way to keeping her job as mayor of the state's second largest city in a race that pits her against longtime Dallas insider, councilwoman Mary Poss. Less than a week before the election, Miller leads Poss by nearly 20 percentage points, according, to results of a poll of likely voters published in Sunday's editions of The Dallas Morning News. The race marks the first time two women have been major contenders for Dallas mayor, but without any urgent issues or striking differences between top candidates, spotlight on the race has been largely usurped by war, American Airlines' financial saga and, most recently, the indictment and firing of a police officer involved in a fake drug scheme that landed dozens of innocent people in jail on drug charges. "There's been a lot more heavy issues than who's the mayor of Dallas," said Rita Whillock, a political consultant and communications at Southern Methodist University.

"It's just not the most important issue on people's minds right now." Both Miller and Poss have focused largely on their commitment to making City Hall more responsive to residents in other words, filling those potholes. In one gauge of the race's gravity, Poss features a computer game on her Web site called "Pothole Pulverizer," in which the user clicks a mouse to try and fill up potholes that appear and disappear more rapidly as time runs out. Poss said the game is intended to poke fun at the shortcomings of Miller's promises to improve basic services, including the city's parks, sidewalks and bumpy streets. "Ms. Miller ran on a platform of fixing potholes," Poss said.

"Many people will tell you they're very disillusioned the potholes have not been filled." For her part, Miller announces on her Web site that 18,000 potholes have been filled under her watch. "And trust me. she writes. "I count them. Miller, who won a special election after former Mayor Ron Kirk announced his bid for U.S.

Senate, has stuck with the back-to-basics, quality of life platform that got her elected. Poss, who served as mayor pro tem during much of her tenure on the council, has portrayed herself as a pro-business candidate dedicated to bringing more business to Dallas. "We have to turn around the city and make it a business-friendly environment and we have to do it fast," Poss said. There are some notable differences: Poss sharply opposes a smoking ban in Dallas businesses that Miller helped pass. Poss supports the job performance of Police Chief Terrell Bolton while some in Dallas believe Miller would try to oust him if she's re-elected.

Despite the turbulent economic tides and resulting budget dilemmas Miller has faced over the past year, political observers expect her to prevail in Saturday's election. The perception of Miller as a pushy agitator may have given voters cause to doubt her in the first election, but her strong-willed nature seems to be working for her this time, Jillson said. As a journalist, Miller was known for her scathing reports on Dallas politicians and as a councilwoman, she engaged in shouting matches with former Mayor Kirk.
