El Camino College is seeking an equity-minded full-time, tenure-track faculty member to join its Sign Language instructional team. Some assignments may include evening, weekend hours, and/or dual enrollment courses offered offsite on high school campuses.

Under the supervision of the Special Resource Center Director and division dean, this faculty position provides instruction in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Interpreter Education courses with an emphasis on advanced ASL levels, ASL Linguistics, Deaf Culture, and fingerspelling.

The position requires participation in a variety of campus and divisional activities such as department meetings, committee meetings, student activities, and office hours. Faculty are also expected to foster collaborations with employers, industry/trade groups, universities, and high school partners and form partnerships with related instructional disciplines to support Guided Pathway initiatives and to improve student outcomes.

The ability to effectively teach Canvas online classes in order to offer online or hybrid courses is important. El Camino faculty must either complete our Online Learning & Teaching with Canvas (OLTC) course or provide sufficient evidence that they are prepared to develop and teach quality online courses through our waiver process.

Extensive knowledge in the field applicable to current industry standards is required as well as participation on advisory boards.

Applicants should demonstrate experience examining and remediating their instruction, interactions, and/or practices to more effectively engage and support diverse students.

The position requires development/review of curriculum and assessment of learning outcomes to improve teaching and learning in achieving El Camino College's mission of institutional effectiveness, quality educational programs, and vibrant student support services.

Candidates invited to interview will present a teaching demonstration on assigned topic.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and two years' experience instructing American Sign Language/Interpreter Training or English American Sign Language Interpreting; OR

Associate's degree and six years' experience instructing American Sign Language/Interpreter Training or English American Sign Language Interpreting; OR

The equivalent - Candidates not possessing the required qualification(s) as stated on this announcement must complete the Request For Equivalency Form as part of the application process to explain in detail how their qualifications are equivalent to those above; OR

Valid California Community college instructor credential in appropriate subject (per California Education Code 87355 issued prior to July 1, 1990); AND

Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socio-economic, academic, and cultural diversity within student populations, including students with disabilities, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in ASL, linguistics, English-ASL Interpreter training or related field.

Master's degree in ASL Education, (MASLED) or Interpreting

Two (2) years' experience in teaching ASL or ASL/English interpretation.

Experience in developing curriculum, designing instructional materials and utilization of appropriate equipment.

The possession of native or near-native language skills in ASL (defined as ASLPI proficiency level of 4 or better, or SLPI: ASL proficiency level of Superior-Superior Plus or equivalent skills); and active participation in the "deaf community."

Participation in professional growth activities such as the CIT, RID, ASLTA and NAD.

RID certification (NIC, CT and CI, CSC, or EIPA level 4 or 5) or NAD interpretation certification level V.

Demonstrated knowledge of ASL linguistics.

SALARY

The starting salary ranges from $73,328 - $100,718 depending on education and experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Contract shall be for a full-time tenure-track teaching assignment for the 2023 - 2024 academic year, beginning in August.
