How to answer EDD questions? ›

Be honest, but keep answers short. Don't offer up too much extra information. Qualify your answers by stating how you never had and do not have reasonable assurance of future employment. You can always say "I need to clarify something", and explain your rights!

If the EDD finds that you willfully and knowingly provided incorrect information or withheld information to be paid benefits, you could receive 2 to 23 “false statement” penalty weeks. These penalty weeks will be added to your current or future unemployment claim.

Don't express hostility toward your previous employer or the interviewer. If you left because of negative working conditions or you are disputing your employer's version of events, remain professional and avoid demonizing your supervisor, company management or your coworkers.

"An individual is disqualified for unemployment compensation benefits if the director finds that he or she left his or her most recent work voluntarily without good cause or that he or she has been discharged for misconduct connected with his or her most recent work."

How can I get more information about unemployment or my claim? Contact us online using UI Online. You can also speak to a representative by calling 1-800-300-5616 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Pacific time), Monday through Friday, except on state holidays.

Monday – Sunday between 8am and 8pm PST (before or at 8 am, 10:15/10:30am or closer to 6/7pm seem to be best times). There are 4 levels of EDD representatives: Tier 1 – cannot help you address problems and have limited access to your account. Will usually offer to put you on a 'call back' list.

You may also certify by phone using EDD Tele-CertSM at 1-866-333-4606. Important: For faster processing, submit your certifications timely within 14 days after the “complete and mail this form on” date displayed on your claim form. Certifying early or late could result in a delay or denial of your benefit payments.

The EDD collects employment data from employers and can detect unreported wages, so it is important that you report any earned wages to avoid committing UI fraud.

Fraud: If we determine that you intentionally gave false information or withheld information, the overpayment is considered fraud. You will have to pay a 30 percent penalty in addition to the overpayment amount. You may also be disqualified for future benefits for up to 23 weeks.

What happens if my EDD claim balance is zero? ›

Can I still qualify for unemployment benefits if my EDD notice shows that I have $0 in benefits available? Our system might determine that you have $0 in benefits available if we are unable to verify your identity or your wages. If this happens, we may need more information to process your claim.
