Editors’ Thoughts

Why We Like It: The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is the best rewards credit card because it gives 2% cash rewards on purchases, along with an initial bonus of $200 cash rewards after spending $500 in the first 3 months. Wells Fargo Active Cash can also help you save money on fees and interest. It offers introductory APRs of 0% for 15 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, in addition to a $0 annual fee.

A few other cards could offer the potential for more rewards value, particularly those with travel rewards, but pretty much all of them charge annual fees. For more on why Wells Fargo Active Cash is a great option, check out our full Wells Fargo Active Cash review.

What We Don’t Like: The regular APR is not low, so you don’t want to carry a balance from month to month after the introductory promotion ends. There’s also a balance transfer fee.

Who Should Get It: Apply for Wells Fargo Active Cash if you want to have one great all-around credit card to use for everything.

Why We Like It: The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of the best rewards credit cards with no annual fee because it gives 1.5 - 5% cash back on purchases. Plus, Chase Freedom Unlimited offers an introductory APR of 0% for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers.

What We Don’t Like: Carrying a balance from month to month when the regular APR is in effect will get expensive fast. Also, if you’re transferring a balance, make sure to account for the transfer fee.

Who Should Get It: Apply for Chase Freedom Unlimited if you want to earn bonus cash rewards on purchases without paying an annual fee.

Why We Like It: The Petal 2 Visa Card is one of the best rewards credit cards for people with limited or fair credit due to its low fixed costs and generous rewards rates. For starters, the Petal 2 Card has a $0 annual fee. In addition, the card gives 1% - 1.5% cash back on all eligible purchases, depending on cardholders’ payment history.

What We Don’t Like: It takes a while to get the top rewards rate. New cardholders earn 1% back until they’ve paid six straight monthly bills on time, at which point they start to earn 1.25% back on all purchases. Then, after 12 consecutive on-time payments, the earning rate jumps to 1.5% back.

Who Should Get It: Consider applying for the Petal® 2 Visa® Credit Card if you have limited or no credit history, are not enrolled in school, and want to save money with rewards as you build credit. College students might be able to get better terms.

Are rewards credit cards worth it?

@WalletHub

Yes, rewards credit cards are worth it as long as you don't overspend just to earn the rewards and you avoid interest charges by paying your bill in full every month. The best rewards credit cards are worth more than $2,000 in savings for the average person over the first two years of use, after annual fees.

You need good or excellent credit to get the most worthwhile rewards cards, however. Things aren't as clear-cut for people with lower scores.

How to Choose a Worthwhile Rewards Credit Card

When determining if a rewards credit card is worth it or not, you have to weigh the worth of the rewards against the cost of the card. If the rewards card has no annual fee and you plan to pay the bill in full every month, it's pretty easy to decide the card is worth it.

However, you'll often get the best rewards and biggest signup bonuses from cards that do have annual fees. In that case, you just have to crunch the numbers to make sure you'll get your money's worth.

How to Get the Most Value From Your Rewards Card

Regardless of which rewards card you choose, be sure to understand how you can earn rewards most efficiently. Some cards have higher rewards rates for specific categories, and some give a flat rewards rate that you earn on all purchases. The fastest way to earn credit card rewards is through signup bonuses.

Many of the top rewards cards come with signup bonuses that you can get for meeting a minimum spending requirement in the first three months. The signup bonuses are usually worth several hundred dollars, enough to cover the cards' annual fees for years. And you can get them for spending money you were already planning on spending.

The biggest pros and cons of rewards credit cards are savings with every purchase and extra secondary benefits, on the positive side; and the potential for devaluation and earning caps, on the negative side. Rewards credit cards can be lucrative when used with precision. But they can also end up costing more than they benefit you if you pick the wrong card or carry a balance from month to month.

The best way to choose a rewards credit card is to narrow down your choices to what your credit score qualifies you for, then compare the rewards rates and costs of the remaining options. Next, pick the credit card with the highest expected rewards earnings, based on your spending habits, minus any annual fees.

The smartest way to use a credit card that has rewards is to charge everything that you can afford to it and pay it back quickly (by the due date each month). Avoiding interest is key to maximizing the value of a rewards credit card, since credit card interest rates are higher than credit card rewards rates.

Although there are differences between credit card rewards currencies and the ways in which credit card companies dole them out to different groups, the major types of credit card rewards all work pretty much the same way. You'll earn rewards for...

No, credit card rewards are not taxable in most cases. The IRS views credit card rewards the same way they view discounts, and discounts aren't taxable. Rewards credit cards give points, cash back, or miles on purchases, which you can then redeem for statement credits, gift cards, merchandise, and travel expenses. Because of that, it's like you're getting a small discount every time you make a purchase.
